Our challenges

Heritage

MCAU are experts in the reinvention and repositioning of empty or deteriorating heritage buildings through imaginative design solutions.

Using heritage assets as a springboard for change has many merits beyond just the physical benefits. Theycan help define identity, maintain character, and build on sense of  permanence and wellbeing.

Often heritage buildings are in a state of decline, and whilst they are offered understandable levels of protection, they frequently continue to suffer owing to outdated use or restrictions on change.

Nearly 400,000 of the most important historic places in England are listed, and there are over 5,000 buildings, structures and sites currently on Historic England’s ‘Heritage at Risk Register’.

Finding uses and solutions for these assets is increasingly difficult.

Often heritage buildings have strong original architecture capable of being adapted to new uses, through creative remodelling or structural innovation with significant environmental/ carbon benefit.

Our extensive experience of preserving heritage assets, working alongside local authorities and building owners is market leading.

We deliver reinvention through imaginative design solutions for changes of use, best illustrated by the repurposing of Ashton Old Baths, a Grade II* listed former Victorian Swimming Baths in Manchester, which now houses one of the most imaginative and creative business hubs in the country.
