Neighbourhood Renewal

West End Morecambe

The decline of the British holiday has seen demand for the guest house reduce with a subsequent decline in a number of Morecambe’s neighbourhoods.

In Morecombe’s West End a predominance of bedsits in former grand Edwardian Town Houses became interspersed with family living has resulted in a decline with mounting social problems.

Having attempted to tackle the problem through the Housing Market Renewal Initiative the withdrawal of funding left the council with which clusters of empty properties and  a neighbourhood in a spiral of decline.

MACU converted 29 empty guesthouses into 51 homes, and 23 guesthouses into 45 homes including a mix of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom apartments and 5 bedroom houses in the first 2 phases.

By retaining the quality of these heritage assets, a sustainable new neighbourhood has emerged and families returned to the area

An energy efficiency strategy reduces running costs by approximately 50% over that of a typical Victorian house or apartment conversion.

The rear yards and outrigger extensions have been demolished to create an attractive central communal courtyard overlooked by private gardens.
